Excerpt

A few hours later, the evening sky darkened, and the warm, humid day gave way to a balmy night. People began to gather along the harbor, excited murmurs rippling through the growing crowd. Children giggled and fidgeted, the voices drowning out the usual sounds of water slapping against pylons, ropes creaking as boats fought their tethers, and cats begging fishermen for scraps.
Kitsune veritably danced in anticipation, her backpack knocking against her back as she moved. This was her second favorite time of year, after the Sakura Festival in spring. While the blooming cherry blossoms during April brought her peace, this night, the night of the Yokohama International Fireworks, made her feel like a child again, giddy with delight. The pops and crackling as the pretty pyrotechnics exploded into twinkling bursts of color always gave her a thrill. As the city ushered in summer, promises of green tea ice cream and trips to the beach filled her thoughts, much as they always had.
While Kitsune called Japan her true home, she lived in Australia to attend university. She was studying for her Masters of Science degree, majoring in Zoology at the James Cook University in Cairns. At twenty-three years old, she was well on her way to achieving her dream of being a zoologist. She already volunteered at the Cairns Tropical Zoo when she wasn’t studying. She loved Japan, but the variety of wildlife she worked with in Australia was something she couldn’t pass up. It had become her second home.
She wandered along the dock, weaving between the people milling around, waiting for the fireworks to start. She barely noticed where she was going, lost in thoughts of her two homes. She didn’t see the tall, lanky stranger until he bumped into her.
His stark blue eyes were the first thing she noticed when she looked at him. There was a sharp cunning in his gaze, and she felt as though he were sizing her up as a bird would potential prey. As her breath caught in her throat, tingles shot through her, setting her nerves on fire.
He flicked his jagged styled fringe out of his face with a grin.
“I’m so sorry. I was lost in my own little world and didn’t see you. The fireworks are my favorite festival, and I just get so excited, you know?”
His eyes sparkled and she could almost feel his elation. She struggled to find her voice as the sound of his made her stomach quiver, and she thought her bones would melt.
“I’m Karasu, by the way.”
When she didn’t reply immediately, he arched an eyebrow, and his quizzical appearance warmed her heart, shaking her from her hypnotized daze.
“Kitsune.” She smiled, hoping she wouldn’t come across as a silly schoolgirl with a crush. “I know what you mean. About the fireworks, that is. I come home every year for this.” She glanced around and sighed, content.
“How fitting.” He grinned, giving her a wink that threatened to crumble what dregs of composure she’d managed to gather. “You certainly suit the name of Fox.”
A second wink from him caused her to blush, warmth spreading across her cheeks, neck and ears as a pulsating heat started low in her belly. She bit her lip, pondering what it would be like to kiss him. His mouth appeared soft, gentle, and he broke into a smile with ease.
Karasu cleared his throat, bringing her back to reality. “I know, I’m hot,” he joked, grinning once more.

About the Authors
Phoenix Johnson
Phoenix Johnson has always been intrigued by the written word. Even when she was a young girl, she usually had her nose stuck in at least one book, and her need to read would drive her to peruse the back of the same cereal box each morning at breakfast. Paranormal and fantasy captured her heart, with tales about dragons, magic, and fanciful creatures sweeping her away to a wonderful new world where she felt she truly belonged. While she dabbled in writing while in primary school, it wasn't until high school that she decided she should try her hand at writing her own book, and even gave poetry a try.
She wandered away from writing for a few years, but was soon encouraged to return and, within months of picking up the proverbial pen, Phoenix' first story, The Wolf In The Neighborhood, was accepted for publication by Naughty Nights Press. While working on the rest of the Wolf Smitten Trilogy, Phoenix decided to take on a university degree, and is now in the final stretch of her Bachelor of Art's degree in Professional Writing and Publishing, with plans to continue on to her Master's degree.
In early 2015, Phoenix was thrilled to discover she'd made two Top 5 lists with three entries in the Easychair Bookstore Awards. In June, it was announced she had placed first in Best Paranormal with Once Bitten Twice Shy, the second installment in her Wolf Smitten Trilogy, while The Wolf In The Neighborhood and Wolf Smitten placed third in their respective categories of Best Paranormal and Best Series. Once Bitten Twice Shy also recently won Best Paranormal Erotic from Erotic Writer's Guild's Ravishing Reads Awards.
With her inclusion in the Alphas on the Prowl Box Set in 2015, Phoenix hit the top 100 bestsellers lists across numerous distributors, number 1 bestseller on several Amazon lists, and this was quickly followed by the announcement of her achievement of number 1 bestseller for her publisher, Naughty Nights Press, for the entire year of 2015. The awards and achievements have only served to strengthen her ambitions, and she is now aiming at reaching the bestseller lists for USA Today and New York Times.
Phoenix has been working hard to make 2016 her year, and has been busy getting prepared for the numerous projects she has on the go for this year. She is extremely excited to see where her writing career takes her next.

Author Chat Friday with Phoenix Johnson

So once again I am a little late, and I do apologise. Yesterday was a pretty silly day, and then by the time I had a chance to post, I had no idea just what to write. So I slept on it, and I think I have an idea now. Of course, the way my mind works I'll probably start of talking about topic A and then end up talking about a dream I had last month on a Tuesday night... If I do go off on a tangent, please do bare with me; I plead pregnancy brain! (For those who don't know, my partner and I are expecting our second child in August. So I will probably be a little silly with posts for a while, and with moving to a bigger place in a couple months, things will be a bit hectic. But I won't forget about The Naughty Pages, I promise.)

Alright, what was I saying... Oh, that's right. What my author chat today is about. The annoying and silly questions authors get asked. Knowing as many other authors as I do, I can tell you, there have been some real doozies!

"Will your book be in print?"
Now, in itself, it doesn't annoy me. My first one has only come to ebook, but I'm hoping it's popular enough the publisher finds it worthwhile putting the trilogy in to print. We'll see further down the road. I know, however, that other authors quite probably get frustrated by this. Ebooks are becoming more popular than print, yet there are so many people still asking for print. I love that, personally. I'll always prefer hard copy to digital as a reader. However, the digital copy means that stories that are short, yet don't necessarily belong in an anthology can now stand on their own and be read, and loved, by readers like stories are meant to be. Unfortunately, with so many readers still preferring print, many authors will be asked this question A LOT, and more than likely get quite frustrated by it.

"What happens in the next one?"
I have had a few people try to pry the plot out of me for Once Bitten Twice Shy (book two of Wolf Smitten), but I've been able to laugh it off. If you want to know, you have to sit patiently and wait. I know, it's frustrating to wait so desperately for a sequel. I have done plenty of waiting for "the next book" myself, so believe me, I know. And it's not just the reader waiting; often, the book may already be written, but it needs to go to an editor. Editors have many other books to edit, so they can't drop everything just to get one particular one published. Besides, the wait makes it all the sweeter, doesn't it?
Back to the question, though. Many readers might try to claim they know what the next book in a series is about. It's the same with movies. Goodness knows how many false trailers for movie sequels I've seen. The Fast in the Furious series is a great example. The sixth movie is only just about to come out, yet there are already false trailers for a seventh on youtube, using clips from movies not even in the FF series! It's really a bit idiotic, in my opinion. There isn't even a promise that there will be a seventh. Seriously, fans, just calm down and continue with your actual lives, please. Leave that up to the writers.

"Being an author must be so awesome, you get to stay at home all day!"
Ok, I haven't been asked this, but I know it's an assumption many people have. One I intend to correct. No, this is not always the case. I have a few friends who work 60+ hours a week in a "normal" job, then come home and still manage to write a few thousand words before crashing in to bed, to start it all again tomorrow. One in particular, I still just shake my head at the amount that she does every day. Wow. (You know who you are, lady!)
Myself? Ok, yes. I stay at home all day. But I'm not kicking back doing nothing until inspiration hits. I study full time. I have a 3-almost-4-year-old with another on the way. I proof-read. I have a place to keep clean (thank you so much to my fantastic man for helping with that!), and food to cook (again, thank you for helping most nights, babe!). Then, when I can squeeze some brain power after studying and proof-reading, THEN I might be able to get some words written down for the next one. Very few authors are able to sit at home all day to focus on writing. Most of us have full time jobs we need to keep to support the family and keep our backsides in a house with power so we can type away at our computers. Or, in my case, study so that I can get a great job. Point being, it's not an easy ride like so many people assume. Life does get in the way quite often. So unless it's someone like J K Rowling (who would still have public appearances and all that famous person stuff), then don't assume they sit at home all day doing next to nothing.

Well, I think 3 questions is enough for this week. I might have some more for next time. It's a month away, so we'll just see now, won't we?
Next time you go to ask an author a question, stop and think for a minute. Make sure it's not a question that could make you look like an arse. The author will thank you for it!

Special Promo Monday: Intolerance Paralleled in Paranormal Fiction by Kiki Howell

This week we're going for something different. Instead of just the standard promo stuff, Kiki wants to talk about intolerance within the paranormal. This should be quite interesting, so take it away, Kiki!!

In the real world, intolerance is something that really bothers me, gets under my skin and gets me standing on my soap box as my mother says… no matter who it is aimed at. I’m more of a quiet person though, not one to just offer my opinions unless I know you really well – hence my poor mother. LOL Yet, as a writer, I get to mouth off about the injustices I see in the world in my fictional writing from time to time. Writing is therapy, right? So I watch the news, and sometimes I just have to write.
In my At War in the Willows series, I got a whole paranormal world involved in mouthing off about intolerance! In the small resort town of The Willows, vampires, witches and werewolves live together peacefully in public, but are forbidden to relate in private. The humans remain gloriously unaware - well for the most part ;) In each book in the series I pair together two different paranormal creatures, have them fall in love, and thus a war breaks out and escalates through each of the stories in the town. Some from each clan (witch, vampire and werewolf) want things to stay as they are, fears from the unknowns of them “getting together” bring about prejudices that must be fought by those who wish to be together. Much more complicated than in the real world where just skin color or beliefs or whatever divide people.
In the Willows, in order for prejudices to form and fights to break out, I made a list of the strengths and weakness that are typical for each of my creatures. I had to examine how say vampire and werewolf
could relate, how they could fight, how they could stand on either side of the issues of being together, etc. I actually didn’t have to stray very far from the usual myths in order to make it all work. Fights in the
real world among humans are built on much less, I can tell you that. The politics of the whole story fell in line easily, very closely related to prejudices and politics today in our own world where man fights man.

I guess my biggest thing though was to show that there were inherent dangers with the creatures being together (you know, the paranormal worlds always amp up any problem) but that with love, with understanding, with compassion, that the initial problems could be overcome - that it was really opening people’s minds that mattered. I believe that in the real world as well. I'm a champion of the underdog, and in this trilogy, that will probably be pretty evident. What I ended up with were three very intense stories, ones that linger in dark, mystical worlds, just the way I like my fiction, and have an underlying moral fiber along with battles and romance.

At War in the Willows Series Blurb:
The Willows is a resort town run by vampires, werewolves and witches. Here, their true identities are kept secret from humans, and intimate relations between the individual clans are strictly forbidden. When it becomes known that the vampire Amberlyn has fallen in love with the werewolf Kane, the tedious line of their co-existence has been crossed. Caught in the crossfire of this revelation, Drake, the vampire
clan leader and Amberlyn’s maker, is killed along with an innocent witch. These deaths spark a series of horrific events leading to an all out War In The Willows.

In Book 1, Amberlyn’s vampire brother, Isaac, always one to kick ass first and deal with the consequences later, kidnaps a witch, Winter. He intends to find out what type of retaliation the witch clan is planning
against the vampires and werewolves. In doing so, he finds so much more than he bargained for.

By Book 2, Isaac and Winter devise a plan to try to get the Elders of the clans talking peacefully. But, things don't go as they'd hoped, and the fighting between the clans becomes more devious - deadly.
Now, Devin, another Vampire of Drake's making, steps in to help pick up some of the pieces as his sister, Amberlyn, fights to be with the werewolf, Kane.

When Book 3 begins, it is Devin who hides the biggest secret; he’s in love with a local human. In a moment of desperation – of love – Devin sweeps this human, Sara, away to his home in order to keep her out of harm’s way.

Unexpected close encounters, bodies ripe with need, and situations beyond their control lead to forbidden relationships. Now three vampires, a witch, a werewolf and a human must ride along the edges of the rules. They will attempt once unthinkable romantic entanglements despite all those who oppose their relationships while fighting for their lives as well.
With the Willows full of violence and bloodshed, meetings and magic amiss, will the clans ever be able to find peace among them again? Or, will this war destroy the Willows?

Reviews for Book I, The Vampire's Witch
“This is the first adult book I've read by Kiki Howell. And it was delicious! Good plot, great
characters and sexy enough to raise the temperature in my house about 20 degrees... It's a very
fast read, only about 50 pages. But it's a real page turner!” ~4/5 Stars by Lilac Wolf

“Ms Howell weaves a spell binding web that ensnares the mind and lets the reader drift away in to another world. I highly look forward to the next two books in this series!” ~4/5 Stars by Phoenix Johnson (That's right, you should have read this one here, first!!)

Thank you, Kiki, fantastic post that I completely agree with. I look forward to getting around to The Vampire's Wolf, and The Vampire's Human when that releases!
